"Why Online Dating Isn't As Scary As Most People Think"

The popularity of the Internet has grown more than 20x over the last decade, with new people coming online for the first time every day.  Yet, there are still people that are skeptical when they hear the words "Online Dating."  Why is it so hard to fathom that a sincere, caring, and emotional relationship can blossom over the Internet.

The skeptic has trouble believing this because it is a new phenomenon, and worries about getting to "know" a person.  They are afraid that only later they would find out that they have been communicating with a convicted felon named Bubba.  However, for the most part "meeting" someone online can be very satisfying.

There are many places to meet people online -- chat rooms, message boards, newsgroups, and even dating & matchmaking services.  With many topics to choose from, it is easy to find a place where the participants will have similar interests.  This is one of the biggest hurdles to overcome when meeting someone -- either online, or in the "real" world.

Online it is a different story.  Both you and the person you are communicating with know that there is a shared common interest.  Many times these people find that they share many of the same interests and beliefs.  Soon they begin communicating more and more by e-mail and Instant Messaging.

After a very short time of communicating, you may begin to really look forward to hearing from this person.

Depending on how far along the relationship has progressed, you might even feel guilty and this overwhelming sense of joy upon receiving an e-mail from your new online "special someone."  This could even lead to sending and receiving multiple-page e-mail's daily, along with many shorter e-mail's simply telling your online sweetheart hello.

One main advantage of getting to know someone online is that appearance is not the first thing that is noticed.  You really get to know this person without either of you dressing to impress.  You can be yourself, and there isn't the worry of coming up with lies to impress this person.

The dating world is a gamble, sort of like going to a casino.  You could go to one table and bet all your money, hoping against odds that you hit the jackpot.  This is similar to the person who will not consider online dating because it is too risky.  Is it not more risky to place everything in one spot, rather than placing a little bit all over the place.  This is what happens with online dating. You expose yourself to more people than those in your immediate community.
